Moon photographer I am not. These are not masterpieces by any means. But I knew the moon was going to be huge last night and I thought it would be fun to try to get a few shots. It was going to be past my kids’ bedtime but my husband and I thought it would be cool to surprise the kids and take them to the beach to see the moon rise. We got them in their PJs and told them we were going outside to see the big, full, super moon. When we got outside, we started saying things like, “Hmmm, these houses are going to block our view. Maybe we should find a place with a better view.” The kids started giggling as we hopped into the car. As we drove we asked, “Where can we go that has less trees? Is there somewhere with NO trees?” Until finally they yelled, “THE BEACH!” They were so excited they were going to the beach in pajamas.
My awesome, supportive husband didn’t even blink when he saw me loading two cameras and a tripod into the car. Pretty sure he knew my true motives from the moment I said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to take the kids to the beach to see the super moon?”
This was my first ever attempt at pictures of the moon. I don’t have a great zoom lens, nor do I have the desire to own a great zoom lens. (Too many other lenses on my list!) I definitely didn’t nail this, but I had a lot of fun playing around. Until my kids started freaking out because it was dark and there were crabs out. My oldest was the only one who would stand still enough to try to get the obligatory “holding the moon” shot. Here they are in chronological order. 🙂
My husband’s mom is a gorgeous Argentine woman. She’s got jet black hair, olive skin, and beautiful brown eyes. My husband looks a lot like her. His siblings all have dark hair and eyes and a year round tan. So when I met his dad, a blue eyed, light skinned, light haired man, I said, “So is he your stepdad?” Those Argentine genes dominated! (And now I’ve got a son who looks a lot like his grandpa!) Can you tell which genes dominated in this beautiful family? 😉 I had a lot of fun with them! These girls were a piece of cake to photograph!
One of the things I love about this gig is that I get to watch families grow. The last time I photographed this family, there were 4 of them. They’ve since added another sweet baby girl to the mix. The son is the same age as one of my boys, except at least 6 inches taller. My little guy will hit a growth spurt at some point, right? Maybe? It’s okay. He is actually oblivious to the fact that he’s short. One day he and the cute boy in these pictures were walking into their school and my son saw their reflections and it suddenly hit him, “Hey!!!…..You’re bigger than me!” Yup. As is the rest of your kindergarten class, Buddy.
{ And excuse the pixelation. Last time I’m using this collage maker. I promise these are clear and sharp. 🙂 }
I had two M Family shoots back to back last month. Both were at the same beach and there was a wedding going on at the beach on both nights. I’ve been back to this beach twice since, and both times there have been weddings. Even on a Tuesday night. Popular place to get married!
Some kids I photograph get a kick out of the crazy things I put on my head during a shoot. Some do not. Some stare at me like I’ve lost my mind. Sometimes I have to resort to fake crying. Whatever works!! This little guy on the left was determined to not find me amusing. But muahhahahahaha…you see smiles below, don’t you? Oh the things the people at the beach saw me do. Worth it? I think so!
So glad I was able to capture this family all together with their newest addition! What a little cutie! And I always love the fun colors this momma chooses. So vibrant and perfect for the beach! 🙂
The cute mom in these photos lived on my street growing up. There was a big group of us on that street that were all in the same age range and it was so much fun! We had lots of games of manhunt, kickball, lots of girl talk (and yes, teenage girl drama…it can’t be helped), but one of the memories that stands out the most is singing all the songs from Grease at her house. Ohhh, good times. She married her high school sweetheart and I’ve gotten to photograph their cute family several times in the last few years. Oh, how I cringe when I see the photos from our first shoot together! They were terrible. Sorry about that, C! But thanks for letting me practice on you way back when!Â
My day on the beach with the M Family was not a sunny one. Grey clouds filled the sky. BUT, that didn’t stop us and I love the soft feel it gave these photos. Oh and this momma isn’t just adorable and fun, she’s also talented in the craft/sewing department. Check out her work HERE.
When I was in 6th grade I thought I was all that and a bag of chips (that’s how we talked then, in case you didn’t know). I was approximately 4 ft 9″ and on the pudgy side. My mom wouldn’t let me shave my legs yet….and I’m Hispanic….so…..I wore pants everyday. I had some sweet red glasses, but the red part was chipping off to reveal gold underneath. Really hot stuff. And…AND…I had a bowl haircut. Just take a moment to imagine the gorgeousness. But I had some really high self esteem going on. At the end of the school year, we got to go on a field trip to the Skating Rink. There was this boy I had a huge crush on. All the girls did. We’ll call him Mr. Popular. So there I was, skating around on my cool roller skates, when a Boyz II Men song came on and they announced, “Okay, this last song is going to be a couples skate.” A couples skate! Where you hold hands!! I slowed down and tried to not look too loserish, and THEN, Mr. Popular came by and grabbed my hand!!! We were couples skating!! I was SO COOL. I was still smiling on the bus ride home. Until. One of the popular girls said, “You know they paid Mr. Popular $5 to couples skate with you, right?” Dream crushed.
Don’t worry, my swan years arrived soon after. An awesome and very studly man married me and we have 4 great kids…life is good.
You know who was NOT an ugly duckling? THIS girl. I used to see this girl at church when she was the same age I was during my bowl cut years and she was just as beautiful then as she is in these pictures. Loved taking her senior photos!
After meeting this cute couple at their maternity session, I was excited to see them in action as new parents when they came to my home studio. I love looking back on how I felt in those first few weeks as a first time mom to my oldest son. Everything is new, you are EXHAUSTED, and you’ve been peed on more times than you care to count. But you are in a little love bubble with your tiny little boy who looks like grumpy little old man. It’s awesome. Well, if these two were exhausted, it didn’t show! This little guy was so sweet and calm for his session. The colorful blankets were made by his grandma!
When I was 14, my cousins moved here from Colombia, South America. This pretty lady you’re about to see was only 2 at the time. And she was the CUTEST. (Hi Cousin! Am I allowed to say these things on my blog? It’s true. You were the cutest. I could tell some stories…or show some pictures…but I won’t. ;)) She’s been like the little sister I never had and I’ve had so much fun watching her grow into this beautiful lady. Her personality is awesome and I could talk to her all day. I mean…it’s so bad that during our shoot we ran out of light because we were spending too much time chatting! But we still got some great shots of her looking gorgeous. This girl can “smize” like it’s her job. She’s still the cutest. Love her. YOU’RE GRADUATING!!!
Can I tell you a story? It’s going to make you think of me as a scary stalker. I feel pretty comfortable with that.
When I was 14, I started going to dances once a month at my church. It was there that I spotted my future husband. From the first time I saw him, I thought he was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. Okay boy. He was 16 at the time. Each month, I looked forward to going to those dances to catch a glimpse of him, even though he didn’t know I existed. Am I scaring you yet? It gets worse. I soon started writing about him in my journal saying, “I am going to marry him.” Practiced writing my name with his last name and everything. Yes, Internet, I am putting this out there. No shame in my game.
At one such dance…pretty sure I was 16 by this time…I asked one of my most favorite youth leaders ever (still love her to this day) to take my little disposable camera and figure out a way to get a picture of him for me. LIKE A STALKER. She humored me and did it. And I still have that photo. We didn’t start dating until 3 years later, and I waited awhile after that to show him that photo. Taped in my journal. He married me anyway. Probably out of fear. But like I said, I’m comfortable with that. 😉
This wonderful youth leader just happens to be the mom of this gorgeous lady in these pictures. And this gorgeous lady and her handsome hubby have a somewhat similar love story. Maybe not quite as stalkerish, but similar in the “I loved you way back when” sense. They are such a fabulous couple and I had so much fun photographing them. Enjoy!
